Get the Badge for your future: piloting Open Badges in Catalonia’s schools

19 Oct, 11:43
The project “Get the badge for your future” (“Troba la insígnia per al teu futur"), developed by Nexes Interculturals (Barcelona City of Learning) with the team from the Cities of Learning network, was one of the two winning projects of the mSchoolsLab. The call is focused on piloting educational, innovative digital solutions in the schools of the Catalonia region.

mSchools Lab is an open innovation program that aims to promote collaboration between educational centres and the EdTech industry to respond to the real needs of the educational community through a transformative, safe and healthy use of technology. Last year, they launched their first call to identify innovative digital solutions at national and international levels. The aim was to address the following challenge: how can technology contribute to motivation, personalization of learning and school success? In this call, they received more than 100 proposals worldwide.

The “Get the badge for your future” pilot project aims to create learning pathways with a territorial focus to connect young students with digital or face-to-face learning opportunities according to their interests and, through this, foster their motivation for learning. For that, we will co-create, based on the students' imagination, different archetypes acting as future characters that they can relate to. At the same time, it will give teachers a more complete vision of their students' interests and skills.

The piloting will take place in four Catalonia schools and be divided into different phases. It starts with diagnosing the context where youth workers from the Nexes team, on the one hand, will facilitate focus groups and participatory workshops and, on the other, will gather and analyze data from online surveys. Following the analysis, archetypes and learning pathways will be created in collaboration with schools and the CoL team. A phase of training teachers to use the CoL platform will follow, as the students will try out the learning pathways by the students. The project is going to be finalized with the evaluation of the process

Several online meetings took place between April and July 2024, with the presence of mSchools, Nexes, CoL, and school representatives. Also, members of the Universitat Oberta de Catalunya (UOC) were present since they will act as the project's independent evaluator. The piloting will officially start in September and will end in June 2025.

The mSchools Lab initiative is promoted by Mobile World Capital Barcelona through its Digital Future Society and mSchools programs. Through public-private collaboration, the identification, piloting and evaluation of the impact of digital solutions with the potential to contribute to the improvement and digital transformation of education is promoted
